Chapter 27

Roark

Kelt and I watched the coverage of Joedon’s revelation in our bedroom while Jill sulked in hers. She’d absolutely refused to learn anything about reeth or don, nursing her grudge against me for my implied weakness in dealing with Joedon. I was reaching the end of my tolerance for the woman and only Kelt’s sweet pleading kept Jill under my roof.

The lithe movements of the don youngsters, playing soccer intrigued me. Even the smallest girl, the one who’d melded with the roan filly right in the middle of a game, moved with power and grace. Of course, the various reeth showed incredible dexterity in their play, controlling their power as to not injure any of the clumsy humans. I searched for a way to inveigle one or more of them into my service.

“Look how those reeth work with the children!” Kelt’s words brought my thoughts to the scene. “We should buy one for Roalt! They seem better companions than we’ve found so far.” She’s a genius, I thought.

“My Sweet, I don’t think we can buy one. But I’ll talk to Joedon as soon as I might. He said he could get us one…if we remain cooperative.”

She cuddled closer. “I would love that.”

The next week, Kelt and I graciously attended Lord Metz’ presentation of his eldest daughter and her don husband to the world, leaving Jill at home. He held the party in the central courtyard just outside the Palace and invited every influential family of Pith and Kavv. Since this party was the first of its kind ever to be held in the two city-states, and the invitation had failed to explain the purpose, curiosity brought a near one hundred percent attendance, according to Garard.

Lord Metz and Lady Shar stood side-by-side with us, welcoming the arriving guests outside a contrived entrance made of two tall trees pulled into an arch. Pith palace guardsmen escorted each family into a courtyard lavishly decorated with potted trees and massive flower garlands, lined with long overflowing serving tables and small tables clustered in the center for people to gather and chat.

I was thoroughly bored and Kelt close to fainting from the heat in the brocade gown she’d selected when the Pith royal trumpeter sounded a call to attention. Metz escorted Jaym, Joedon and the twins, along with their reeth, through the crowd to the dais raised near the palace steps. I took Kelt to find a seat and some chilled wine.

“Dear guests,” Metz boomed, face beaming with pride. “Thank you all for coming. I’m sure you wonder why we’re here. We’re celebrating the news that my oldest daughter, Soer Jaym, met and fell in love with the Supreme Don, Joedon.” I thought if he swelled with any more smugness, he’d surely burst. “They’re here today so I can present them and their family to you. Please, welcome them.”

He proceeded to introduce each member of the family and to share his version of their story, which differed a great deal from what I recalled happening.
